State Hazard Mitigation Forum

Hazard mitigation is a shared responsibility between state agencies; county governments; private companies; and non-governmental groups and organizations, including local residents.

The State of Hawai‘i formed the State Hazard Mitigation Forum in 1998 with representatives from a broad spectrum of state and county agencies and the non-governmental sector. Voting Members serve three-year terms and can be reappointed, while Ex Officio Members are non-voting. The Forum serves as an advisory body to HIEMA through these primary functions:

  • Coordinate hazard mitigation activities in the State
  • Recommend and prioritize project nominations for the BRIC and HMGP grant programs
  • Conduct a statewide public awareness campaign
  • Assist in obtaining funds for mitigation projects
  • Develop a hazard mitigation strategy for the State
