Douglas “Doug” Kulonoehu Awai Sr., 82, of Hilo, died April 30 at home. Born in Honolulu, he was the retired owner and mason contractor for Awai Masonry, later known as Awai & Sons Inc., a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Keaukaha Ward, Hawaii Farmers Association and Hawaii Army National Guard veteran.
Burial at Homelani Memorial Park, Ilima Section.
Survived by wife, Isabelle “Belle” Awai of Hilo; daughter, Rochelle (Eugene) Travis of Henderson, Nev.; sons, Douglas (Cheryl) Awai Jr. of Hilo and David (Debi Vierra) Awai of Hilo; brothers, Charles “Charlie” (Claudia) Awai of Honolulu, Wayne (Kathy) Awai of Waikoloa and Wade (Connie) Brosius of Chadds Ford, Pa.; sisters, Jennie “Tita” Silva of Hilo and Barbara Brosius of Clearwater, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; nephews, nieces and cousins.
